Luton Woman, 60, Set to Compete in Hyrox World Championships

Martina McIntyre, a 60-year-old resident of Luton, is gearing up to represent Great Britain at the highly anticipated Hyrox World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden. The event is set to kick off this Thursday, and McIntyre expressed her excitement about the opportunity.

After retiring as a midwife from Luton and Dunstable Hospital in 2020, McIntyre discovered her passion for fitness. "I was a bit shocked when I got the call, but delighted to be taking part," she remarked. She has been diligently training for the competition, acknowledging her nerves but also her eagerness to perform her best.

Transitioning into a role as a personal fitness instructor and gym teacher, McIntyre now works at a local gym where she has received encouragement and support from her colleagues. This nurturing environment has opened doors for her that she never expected to explore.

Having previously participated in a Hyrox event at Olympia in London, McIntyre clinched victory in her age category with a time of one hour and 23 minutes. This achievement earned her an invitation to the world championships, a recognition she holds in high regard. "I'm with some top athletes," she said, emphasizing that simply representing her country is a significant accomplishment in itself.

The Hyrox competition features a unique format that combines running with various fitness challenges, including sled pushes, rowing, and kettlebell walks, making it a rigorous test of endurance and strength. McIntyre's journey highlights the growing trend of older athletes in competitive sports.
