Lakers Eyeing Center Walker Kessler Amid Frustrations with Jazz
The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly focusing on enhancing their roster this summer, with a particular emphasis on strengthening their center position. Deandre Ayton, the current starter, has had moments of strong performance but is often viewed as underwhelming, especially with his player option looming for next season. Meanwhile, backup Jaxson Hayes is set to enter free agency at the end of this month.
Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz has been linked to the Lakers for over a year. As an unrestricted free agent this offseason, his potential move to Los Angeles has been deemed somewhat improbable. However, a recent report from The Athletic suggests that there might be a glimmer of hope for the Lakers in acquiring Kessler.
In his article, Sam Amick revealed that Kessler "is at odds" with the Jazz’s front office regarding his restricted free agency status. The 24-year-old, who was selected 22nd overall by the Memphis Grizzlies and later traded to the Jazz, has expressed dissatisfaction with Utah's decision not to extend him last summer. Sources indicate that the Jazz's approach to his restricted free agency has further fueled his desire to explore opportunities beyond Utah.
Kessler has garnered attention from Lakers fans for his impressive rebounding and shot-blocking abilities. Throughout his NBA career, he has averaged 9.5 points on an impressive 68.1% shooting, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks in just over 25 minutes per game. Although he faced challenges this season, playing only five games due to a torn left labrum, he remains a highly sought-after center in the free agent market.
However, acquiring Kessler may not be straightforward for the Lakers, as the Jazz hold the right to match any offers made to him. It could require a substantial financial commitment, potentially exceeding $30 million, to persuade Utah to let him go, raising concerns about the wisdom of investing heavily in a player known for his defensive rather than offensive prowess.
