Reynolds and Lowe Propel Pirates to Comeback Victory Against Athletics
The Pittsburgh Pirates bounced back from a tough loss with a thrilling 6-5 victory over the Oakland Athletics at Sutter Health Park on Tuesday night. Bryan Reynolds shone in the spotlight, belting two home runs, while Brandon Lowe delivered the decisive hit to secure the win.
The Athletics started strong, taking a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Zack Gelof's grounder resulted in an errant throw by first baseman Spencer Horwitz, allowing three runners to score. Lawrence Butler added to their tally with an RBI double. The Pirates managed to respond in the fourth with a run scored by Nick Gonzales, but the Athletics maintained their edge.
Reynolds sparked a comeback in the sixth with a powerful 408-foot solo home run, bringing the score to 4-3. Endy Rodríguez later added a run, making it a one-run game. However, the Athletics countered with another home run from Gelof, extending their lead to 5-3.
In a dramatic seventh inning, Reynolds hit his second home run, tying the game at 5-5. The Pirates took their first lead of the night in the ninth when Lowe launched a solo shot, marking his 18th home run of the season. Pitcher Gregory Soto closed out the game, striking out two to secure the victory.
Reynolds had an impressive performance, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs in what was his first four-hit game since May 2025. Mitch Keller also made history by surpassing Hall of Famer Steve Blass on the Pirates’ all-time strikeout list with 902 strikeouts.
Looking ahead, the Pirates will send right-hander Braxton Ashcraft to the mound for the final game of the series on Wednesday night. The Athletics have yet to announce their starting pitcher.
