Canada Assistant Coach Voices Frustration After Ismael Kone's Injury
During a recent match, Canada’s Ismael Kone suffered a grave leg injury that prompted a dramatic response from the sidelines. After Kone was taken down from behind by Qatar's Assim Madibo, the referee initially issued a yellow card. However, Canada’s assistant coach Paul Stalteri was heard passionately urging the official to reconsider, shouting, "His (expletive) leg's hanging off. His leg's hanging off. It's a broken (expletive) leg, man."
The situation escalated quickly as the referee reviewed the incident, leading to the yellow card being upgraded to a red. Madibo was subsequently dismissed from the match in the 53rd minute. This decision left Qatar with only nine players, following another red card issued to Homam Ahmed earlier in the game.
Despite the injury setback, Canada delivered an impressive 6-0 victory, marking their first World Cup win in history. The incident unfolded as Kone was attempting to maneuver the ball when Madibo collided with him, resulting in Kone falling to the ground, clutching his left ankle. In a moment of sportsmanship, Madibo raised his hands in apology, acknowledging the severity of his tackle.
Kone was immediately attended to by trainers who secured his leg in an air cast before he was transported off the field on a stretcher, where he waved to the supportive crowd in Vancouver. Following the match, Canada’s head coach Jesse Marsch expressed his concern, stating he "could hear the bone snap," and confirmed that Kone was undergoing surgery at a local hospital.
Ismael Kone, a talented midfielder, was born in Ivory Coast but moved to Montreal at the age of seven. He honed his skills in the CF Montreal academy and made his professional debut in 2021 before transferring to Watford in 2022. This World Cup appearance was his second, having previously debuted in 2022 shortly after earning his first senior international cap.
