White Sox Snap Losing Streak with Eighth-Inning Grand Slam for 5-1 Win Over Yankees

NEW YORK (AP) — In a dramatic turn of events Thursday night, Andrew Benintendi delivered a pivotal pinch-hit grand slam off Camilo Doval in the eighth inning, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 5-1 victory over the New York Yankees. This win marked the end of a frustrating nine-game losing streak at Yankee Stadium for Chicago.

Benintendi, who came to the plate for Randal Grichuk, became the third pinch hitter of the inning and broke a 1-1 deadlock with a powerful swing, sending Doval's first pitch—a 100 mph sinker—into the right-center field stands. This grand slam was the fourth of Benintendi's career and his second home run as a pinch hitter. His impactful hit followed a double by Sam Antonacci off reliever Fernando Cruz, while Tim Hill hit Jacob Gonzalez and Tristan Peters with pitches before finally recording an out.

The victory was significant for the White Sox, as it was their first win in the Bronx since June 8, 2023. Previously, Chicago had struggled, being outscored 22-7 in the first two games of this three-game series and 58-18 during their recent losing stretch at Yankee Stadium.

Colson Montgomery also made headlines by hitting a home run and executing a crucial defensive play in the seventh inning, where he tagged out Anthony Volpe who was attempting to stretch a double. Volpe had hit a ball over the head of left fielder Junior Perez, who made a strong one-hop throw to Montgomery at third base, resulting in Volpe being out by a significant margin.

Ryan McMahon managed to tie the game with a homer in the third inning against bulk reliever Sean Burke, but the Yankees' four-game winning streak came to an end as they fell to 9-5 since the injury of team captain Aaron Judge, who is sidelined with a fractured right rib. The Yankees also lost Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the fourth inning after he fouled a ball off near his groin.

Yankees starter Ryan Weathers had a solid outing, allowing just one run and three hits over 6 1/3 innings while striking out eight and walking one. On the other hand, Burke, who followed Chicago opener Bryan Hudson, permitted one run and five hits, striking out eight over the last 7 1/3 innings. The White Sox's victory improved their record to 5 wins in their last 17 road games and concluded an 11-game stretch against tough opponents including the Phillies, Braves, Dodgers, and Yankees.

Looking ahead, the White Sox will send RHP Erick Fedde (2-5, 4.50 ERA) to face LHP Tarik Skubal (3-3, 2.81) in the first game of a three-game series in Detroit. Meanwhile, the Yankees will have RHP Cam Schlittler (7-3, 1.82 ERA) on the mound against RHP Rhett Lowder (3-3, 4.60) as they begin a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds at home on Friday.
