Canada’s Jesse Marsch Updates on Kone’s Injury Following Qatar Match
Canada's head coach Jesse Marsch confirmed that midfielder Ismael Kone is hospitalized with a suspected leg fracture following a serious injury during the team's 6-0 victory over Qatar. The incident occurred in the 51st minute when Kone was the victim of a reckless challenge by Qatar's Assim Madibo at Vancouver's BC Place.
Marsch spoke to the media after the match, revealing the immediate reaction from the Canadian bench. "It was right in front of us, and everyone could hear the bone snap," he stated. While he hadn't yet spoken directly with Kone, Marsch indicated that the player is set to undergo surgery. "I'm going to go see him after this press conference," he added. "Everybody's a little shaken by the whole experience because of the nature of the injury, and also because Ismael is a big part of the heart of our team. It will be a big loss for us."
Despite the grim situation, Kone, who plays for Italy's Sassuolo, managed to wave to the audience as he was taken off the field on a stretcher while receiving oxygen. Marsch noted, "He was waving to the crowd and almost making everybody else feel at ease with the fact that he's injured and that's an incredible statement about Ismael as a person."
The coach expressed disappointment with the reaction from Qatar's bench after Madibo received a red card for the foul, especially given that the player had apologized to Kone in the dressing room afterward. "I don't understand a reaction from their entire bench to try to start a fight about it being a red card when a clear foul just happened that broke a player's leg -- some strange behaviour," Marsch remarked.
