Canadian wildfire smoke has forced a Major League Soccer game between the Chicago Fire and Vancouver Whitecaps to be postponed.

The match was highly anticipated, given that it was not only set to mark Poland legend Robert Lewandowski’s Fire debut, but it would also see him take on his longtime Bayern Munich teammate Thomas Müller on what is the MLS’s first day back in action following its FIFA World Cup break.

The decision to postpone the game, scheduled to take place at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois, was announced on Thursday afternoon. Fire President of Business Operations, Dave Baldwin, said in a statement, “We share our fans' disappointment, especially given the excitement surrounding our first match back following the FIFA World Cup break and the anticipation of welcoming more than 40,000 fans to Soldier Field.

“With a marquee matchup against Vancouver, the anticipated home debut of Robert Lewandowski, and the Two Friends post-match concert, tonight was expected to be a special evening at Soldier Field. While we know this decision is disappointing, health and safety must come first. We appreciate our fans’ understanding and look forward to welcoming them back soon.”

As alluded to in the message, the planned Two Friends concert has also been put on hold, with the club set to release further details on this “at a later date.”

Fans will now have to wait until early October to see Lewandowski take on Müller, with the game now set to take place on Tuesday, October 6. The club clarified that all tickets for Thursday’s postponed game will still be valid for the fixture’s new date.

This all comes as a result of over 830 wildfires wreaking havoc in Canada, with the wind having forced much of the smoke south of the border. In fact, the Air Quality Index in Chicago reached “Dangerous,” as of the time of publication, with Accuweather stating, “Any exposure to the air, even for a few minutes, can lead to serious health effects on everybody. Avoid outdoor activities.”

Despite the smoke heading south, on Wednesday evening, the NWSL’s Gotham FC was still able to host the Washington Spirit at Citi Field in Queens, New York, with the home side leaving with three points thanks to a first-half goal from U.S. Women’s National Team star Rose Lavelle.

But anticipating the drop in air quality on Thursday, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that cooling stations would be opened and KN95 breathing masks would be made available for free.

“The combination of dangerous heat and unhealthy air is a serious threat to New Yorkers’ health,” Mamdani said. “If you can, stay somewhere cool with air conditioning, limit your time outdoors, drink plenty of water and check on your neighbors — especially older New Yorkers and anyone with a health condition.

“Our administration is opening cooling centers, distributing free masks and expanding outreach across the five boroughs. We’ll get through this the same way we always do: together.”

New Jersey is scheduled to host the World Cup Final on Sunday between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium in Rutherford, with kickoff due to take place at 3pm ET.
