The Arizona Cardinals’ quarterback situation has become a hot topic of discussion recently.
The NFC West franchise is reportedly clashing with its presumed starting signal-caller, Jacoby Brissett, prompting rampant speculation.
“After months of negotiating, quarterback Jacoby Brissett and the Cardinals are still not close to reaching an agreement on a reworked deal for this season,” ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss reported Friday.
“A source told ESPN that the two sides are ‘significantly’ far apart. Brissett has not attended any of the Cardinals voluntary OTAs or the voluntary offseason program as he waits for a new contract for 2026, the second year of a two-year deal he signed in March 2025.”
“His deal currently pays him $4.88 million, with the potential to grow to $5.39 million, of which just $1.5 million is guaranteed. By comparison, Gardner Minshew II, whom Arizona signed as a free agent in March, had $5.14 million guaranteed by the team for 2026.”
If the Brissett-Cardinals saga reaches the point where Arizona feels compelled to trade or release him, the New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, and New England Patriots should be interested in adding the 33-year-old veteran to the fold.
From the Saints’ vantage point, New Orleans saw enough from Tyler Shough in Year 1 to give him the No. 1 QB spot months before the start of the 2026-27 season. That said, it isn’t far-fetched to suggest that Spencer Rattler and Zach Wilson make for one of the weakest backup quarterback rooms in the league.
Brissett would instantly leapfrog both contributors on New Orleans’ depth chart and would help keep the organization afloat if required to replace Shough at any point.
Similarly, the Jets have a clear starting signal-caller for the upcoming campaign after reuniting with Geno Smith earlier this offseason. However, it would be nice to have a reliable No. 2 option to turn to if things go off the rails or a significant injury occurs.
Brady Cook, Cade Klubnik, and Bailey Zappe may not give New York the comfort they’re looking for, which could give them a reason to land Brissett by any means necessary.
The Patriots are in the same boat, as it’s either Drake Maye or bust for the 2025 Super Bowl participants (Tommy DeVito and Behren Morton aren’t dependable pivot options). Why not reunite with a QB that already has some familiarity with the organization and is a far more proven asset? It likely isn’t on New England’s radar now, but things could change in the blink of an eye.
It’ll be interesting to see what lies ahead for Brissett entering Year 11.
