Celtics Legend Paul Pierce Warns Against Trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo

In the wake of an early exit in the playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers, the Boston Celtics are contemplating strategies for a stronger comeback next season. Among the potential moves being discussed is a trade for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, which could see him joining forces with Jayson Tatum, while possibly sending Jaylen Brown to Milwaukee or another team, like the Atlanta Hawks.

However, not all former players agree with this approach. Paul Pierce, a revered Celtics figure, has expressed his strong opposition to the idea of trading for Antetokounmpo. On a recent episode of the “No Fouls Given” podcast, Pierce stated, “I’m not in on this one. You were number two, two years in a row, with what you have. You keep Jaylen, you keep Jayson, and you build on that.” He emphasized that the current duo should not be taken for granted.

Since drafting Brown and Tatum in consecutive years, the Celtics have established a solid track record, consistently winning at least 50 games annually for the past five seasons. Their performance in the 2025-26 season was particularly noteworthy, finishing with a 56-26 record despite Tatum’s limited play due to injury.

Pierce pointed out that maintaining core players is vital for teams that aim for long-term success, citing that successful franchises build around their foundational stars. “Whoever the core pieces are after that, think about the teams that’s been to multiple Finals,” he explained. “Their core stayed together.”

While he sees merit in Antetokounmpo’s skills, Pierce cautioned that introducing another franchise player could disrupt the existing chemistry. He added, “You don’t bring another franchise player in and think it’s gonna work. This works! We know!” Nonetheless, he acknowledged that if there were signs of unrest from Brown, the situation might warrant a reevaluation of the trade.

Despite Antetokounmpo’s limited appearances this past season due to injuries, he still managed to average impressive stats: 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game, showcasing his remarkable talent. With whispers of his availability, several teams, including the Miami Heat and possibly the Orlando Magic, are expected to vie for his services, making this a key storyline to follow in the offseason.
