Vita Vea's Minicamp Hold-In Not Impacting Relationship with Buccaneers

Vita Vea's choice to "hold-in" during this week's minicamp practices has drawn considerable attention, yet it appears to have not strained his relationship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. ESPN analyst Booger McFarland shared insights on NFL Live, clarifying that Vea's actions stem from his desire for a contract extension rather than any discord with the team. “I'm not concerned. Again, we're in June. He's holding in. He's showing up,” McFarland said, emphasizing that there has been no friction between Vea and the organization. He noted that Vea may be motivated by seeing peers like Dexter Lawrence earning significantly more than he currently does.

Head coach Todd Bowles also seems unfazed by Vea's situation. When asked about the defensive tackle, Bowles commented, “It’s not concerning. We’ve been through it before. It’s part of the business.” However, he was less certain when questioned about Vea's attendance at training camp if no new contract is reached, stating, “I cannot tell you that. I cannot speak for him.”

Throughout the offseason, Vea has not participated in team practices. His absence began during OTAs, where attendance is voluntary, and he has opted to train with former teammate Ndamukong Suh in Portland, Oregon. This decision aligns with Vea's intent to avoid potential injuries that could affect his contract negotiations, especially given his past struggles with injuries, notably a calf strain in his rookie year.

As time progresses, there remains an opportunity for Vea and the Buccaneers to come to an agreement, whether through a new multi-year deal or adjustments to his existing contract. The Buccaneers faced a similar scenario in 2024 when star tackle Tristan Wirfs also opted for a hold-in during minicamp. Bowles recognizes that such situations are commonplace in the league, understanding players' motivations for ensuring they are compensated for their performance. For now, the atmosphere between Vea and the Buccaneers remains cordial, and there is hope for a resolution before any potential issues arise.
