Chad Dallas Shines in Major League Debut, Credits Special Timing for Success
ATLANTA (AP) — Chad Dallas received the news of his promotion to the Toronto Blue Jays just this past Tuesday, setting the stage for his major league debut. Coincidentally, the announcement fell on Lou Gehrig Day, marking a year since his father, Tony, passed away due to ALS, a disease synonymous with the legendary New York Yankees player. Reflecting on the moment, Dallas described it as "extremely special, like a little God wink."
In his debut on Thursday night, Dallas showcased his talent by allowing only two hits and one earned run over 3 2/3 innings, leading the Blue Jays to a 7-2 victory against the Atlanta Braves. He was called up from Triple-A Buffalo to serve as a bulk reliever following opener Mason Fluharty, and immediately faced a challenging situation with a runner on third base.
Entering the game in the second inning with one out, Dallas successfully stranded the runner by striking out Sandy León, a moment that Toronto manager John Schneider believes helped calm the rookie's nerves. "Getting out of that inning there kind of set him up to settle down a little bit," Schneider noted. "He was great, man. You know, gets his first win in his debut. So pretty cool."
Despite a rough start to the season at Buffalo, where he held a 4.50 ERA and was 0-3, Dallas made a significant impression on the coaching staff, demonstrating his potential as a reliable relief pitcher. "Dreamed of this day since I was 3 or 4," he shared, reflecting on his long-held aspirations of playing professional baseball. "Tons of happy, super excited. But overall, it was an amazing experience."
As for what lies ahead, Schneider humorously suggested a "beer shower and a good flight to Toronto" for Dallas, who is now poised for his next challenge with the Blue Jays. "The overall message is just go out, compete, trust your stuff and get ready for whatever’s next," he added.
