Chargers' Cameron Dicker Shares Insights on Kicking, Sparking Envy in Soccer Icons

Los Angeles Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker has quickly made a name for himself in the NFL since joining the team in 2022. In 2025, he earned his first Pro Bowl selection after an impressive season where he successfully converted 38 of 41 field goal attempts. His unique preparation routine caught the attention of soccer legends Landon Donovan and Tim Howard during a recent panel discussion.

While football is known for its physicality, kickers like Dicker experience far less contact than their teammates, allowing for a different training approach throughout the week. Dicker shared his weekly regimen leading up to game day during the conversation, explaining, “Game on Sunday, I kick Sunday. Monday, I do legs. Tuesday, we’re in there for five hours, I’ll do an upper body lift, we look at the game film. Wednesday I kick about 50 balls, I’m out there kicking for an hour, hour and a half. Thursday is a lighter kicking day; I’ll do the field goals, hit some kickoff, and then do legs again. and then two days of recovery.”

This revelation surprised both Donovan and Howard, who are accustomed to the rigorous training schedules required in soccer. The duo joked about their own experiences, with Howard quipping, “What was I doing for 22 years?” while Donovan added, “I picked the wrong sport.”

The NFL offseason coincides with the World Cup, creating a unique crossover for sports fans. SoFi Stadium, where Dicker plays, will also host World Cup matches, enhancing the excitement for viewers. Both Howard and Donovan have rich histories with the U.S. Men's National Team, with Howard participating in three World Cups and Donovan representing the country in three tournaments as well.
