Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer Calls for Increased Support Amidst Recruitment Struggles
The Alabama Crimson Tide, despite reaching the College Football Playoff in Kalen DeBoer’s second year as head coach, is facing significant challenges in returning to that level by 2026. With the impending departure of quarterback Ty Simpson, who was selected in the first round by the Los Angeles Rams, the team must choose between Keelon Russell and Austin Mack as his successor. The program is also grappling with the need to enhance its offensive capabilities, particularly in the run game, after losing a pivotal recruiting contest to Texas for standout player Hollywood Smothers.
In a recent interview with Garry L. Harris from WVUA 23, DeBoer emphasized the necessity for greater fan involvement to attract top-tier talent. “We’ve got to continue to grow,” he stated. “There’s no question. We’ve got to continue to adjust to the times. We’ve got to continue to push the envelope. We need the support of anyone that wants to be a part of it.” He further highlighted the importance of NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) funding, asserting, “You can have an awesome staff, but you’ve got to have the NIL support to be able to get the players because they’re the ones that make the plays on Saturdays.”
DeBoer recently secured a lucrative seven-year contract extension worth $87.7 million, boasting a 20-8 record over his first two seasons. However, the recruitment landscape for the 2027 class has begun on a troubling note, with Alabama currently positioned at No. 71 in the 247 Sports rankings.
Despite these challenges, DeBoer remains optimistic about Alabama's potential within the SEC. “I think we’re very competitive, and that’s what I ask,” he remarked. He believes that the resources available for players are unmatched, noting, “I just don’t know another program that can give what we give our guys.” Nevertheless, he acknowledged that to regain the dominance previously seen under Nick Saban, Alabama must enhance its NIL funding to keep pace with rivals in the SEC and Big Ten.
