Chargers' New Strategy with Justin Herbert Focuses on Footwork and Efficiency

EL SEGUNDO, California -- This offseason, the Los Angeles Chargers are emphasizing a fresh approach to quarterback Justin Herbert's development, with a focus on "footwork" and "smart" play, as highlighted by both offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel and head coach Jim Harbaugh.

During organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp, the Chargers coaching staff has concentrated on refining Herbert’s footwork. Harbaugh praised Herbert’s adaptability, stating, "Just the patternization in Mike McDaniel's system required some footwork changes. Been working very hard at those, and as you would expect, Justin has picked it up." This strategic shift includes managing Herbert's throwing workload to prevent unnecessary strain early in the offseason.

Herbert himself acknowledged the change, saying, “I’ve thrown a lot of footballs, and it's May and June. I didn't think it was as necessary to throw as much now.” Throughout OTAs, he was often seen engaging in footwork drills instead of taking part in 11-on-11 situations, focusing instead on technique with a water-filled medicine ball.

McDaniel's method is designed to enhance Herbert's skills without overwhelming him. "You want to talk about a way to make a quarterback focus on footwork," he explained. "Don't allow him to throw a football." He believes this strategy will help Herbert concentrate on improving his mechanics rather than getting distracted by the competitive drive to perform.

In addition to footwork, McDaniel has made adjustments to Herbert's stance in the shotgun formation, encouraging him to put his left foot forward, a technique he noticed in NFL legends like Brett Favre and Tom Brady. McDaniel clarified, "I’m not trying to change Herbert as a quarterback, but rather help him unlock his full potential." Herbert has embraced this new vision, stating, "Mike just talked about how he saw the quarterback position being played and why he thought that was the best way."

As the offseason progresses, both McDaniel and Herbert appear to be developing a strong rapport, reflecting on past successes with other quarterbacks. Given Herbert's challenging season last year, where he faced the highest number of pressures in the league, this tailored approach could be pivotal for the Chargers' offense moving forward.
