Spurs Eye Trade for $43 Million Former Knicks Forward Following Tough Finals Setback
The San Antonio Spurs are considering potential trades to enhance their roster this offseason, particularly focusing on adding depth to their bench. One intriguing candidate is a 31-year-old forward who previously played for the New York Knicks and has a championship pedigree, suggesting he could be a valuable asset for the Spurs.
CBS Sports' Sam Quinn highlighted Bobby Portis as a viable option for San Antonio in a recent analysis. "The cheap, bench-specific option is (Bobby) Portis,” Quinn stated last Sunday. He acknowledged that Portis may not be the defender he once was and that his rebounding has declined, but these issues could be mitigated alongside the Spurs' rising star, Victor Wembanyama. “He can still shoot, and he can still screen, nice traits for a backup power forward on this roster," Quinn added, noting that Portis' contract could align well with the mid-level exception, making a trade feasible.
Portis had an impressive season, finishing second in the league for perimeter shooting efficiency by hitting 45.6% of his three-point attempts across 67 games with the Milwaukee Bucks. This follows a history of strong shooting performances, including a 40.3% rate with the Washington Wizards in 2018-19 and a remarkable 47.1% during the Bucks' championship run in 2020-21. His ability to stretch the floor makes him an appealing target for the Spurs, who may be in search of increased three-point production off the bench as they prepare for the 2026-27 season.
As the Spurs navigate their offseason strategy, they face tough decisions regarding their roster, including potential moves involving high-profile players. The addition of Portis could signify a significant step in enhancing their competitiveness in the upcoming season.
