Chicago White Sox acquire RHP José Urquidy from the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor-league RHP Félix Doroteo

For the second time this month, the Chicago White Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates paired up on a trade.

The Sox acquired right-handed pitcher José Urquidy from the Pirates on Sunday for minor-league pitcher Félix Doroteo.

Urquidy, 31, went 0-1 with an 8.53 ERA and six strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings during five relief appearances for the Pirates from March 29-April 13. He went 5-4 with a 3.66 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 83 2/3 innings in 17 starts with Triple-A Indianapolis.

He was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh on Friday.

Urquidy is 27-17 with a 4.07 ERA and 335 strikeouts in 413 2/3 innings during 86 appearances (70 starts) over seven big-league seasons with the Houston Astros (2019-23), Detroit Tigers (2025) and Pirates (2026).

Doroteo, 21, is 3-2 with a 4.50 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 19 innings over 16 outings (one start) with the Arizona Complex League White Sox this year, his first professional season. He was signed by the Sox as an international free agent on Jan. 15, 2025.

The Sox and Pirates are becoming familiar trade partners. On July 10, the Sox sent infielder Jacob Gonzalez and pitcher Brandon Eisert to Pittsburgh for a Competitive Balance Round A selection (No. 34 overall) in the draft and left-handed pitcher Jaden Woods. The Sox selected Nazareth infielder Landon Thome with the pick the next day.

After Sunday’s trade, the Sox’s 40-man roster increased to 39. The MLB trade deadline is Aug. 3.
