China's World Cup Hopes Rest on Referee Ma Ning Amid Team's Absence
As the World Cup approaches, Chinese football enthusiasts are channeling their hopes into referee Ma Ning, given the national team's failure to secure a spot in the tournament once again. The competition kicks off this Thursday, and Ma has become an unlikely symbol of national pride.
The 46-year-old referee has captured public attention, inspiring a wave of memes and attracting endorsements from notable Chinese companies such as Lenovo and Hisense. Ma is recognized for his strict officiating style, having earned the nickname "card master" after handing out a remarkable nine yellow cards and three red cards during a 2015 match in Shanghai.
This marks Ma's second World Cup appearance, following his role as a fourth official during the Qatar tournament four years ago. Topics surrounding him have garnered millions of views on Chinese social media platforms, with comments ranging from support to lamentations about the state of Chinese football. One user on the platform RedNote quipped, "We have Ma Ning, who do you have?" while another remarked, "Other countries get to watch their own teams play, while we'll watch our referee issue cards."
Currently in Miami for a 10-day training camp for officials, Ma is joined by fellow Chinese representatives, assistant referee Zhou Fei and video assistant referee Fu Ming. Ma, a FIFA-certified referee since 2011, also teaches at the Nanjing Sport Institute.
To share his World Cup journey, Ma recently launched a RedNote account, quickly amassing 197,000 followers. His initial post humorously referenced his reputation for issuing red cards, while another showed him preparing for his duties with dramatic flair, featuring a Lenovo tablet among his gear. "I take up this appointment with confidence and composure. World Cup, here we come," he stated in his caption. China's football aspirations have faced significant challenges over the years, with the team last participating in the World Cup in 2002, where they failed to earn a single point.
