Chris Paul Reflects on Vetoed Trade to Lakers and Kobe Bryant Conversation

Recently retired NBA star Chris Paul, celebrated as one of the finest point guards in basketball history, shared insights into a pivotal moment from his career. Having announced his retirement after 21 seasons, Paul is expected to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer, thanks to his impressive records, including leading the league in assists per game five times and steals per game six times.

In 2011, during what was arguably the prime of his career at age 26, Paul was on the verge of a significant trade to the Los Angeles Lakers. However, the deal was ultimately blocked by then-NBA commissioner David Stern, who was overseeing the New Orleans Hornets, the team Paul was with at the time. During an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," Paul recounted the experience surrounding the trade's rejection.

“It was very, very wild to say the least,” Paul recalled. “It was crazy times. Our team at the time was owned by the league. We had just come out of CBA negotiations. I remember where I was.” He explained that he had spoken with the late Kobe Bryant on the phone just before the trade was vetoed. “It was basically like a little [expletive] storm from there,” Paul added, noting the emotional turmoil he experienced during that period.

Speculation suggests that the trade's rejection was influenced by a desire for competitive balance in the league following a recent lockout, with other team owners expressing concerns about the impact on parity. “The whole point of that CBA negotiation was to make the league more balanced,” Paul pointed out, indicating that many owners felt it would undermine competition if the trade went through.

If the trade had succeeded, it might have enabled Bryant to secure at least one additional championship, further cementing the Lakers' legacy in the early 2010s. Instead, Paul was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers, where he revitalized the team but fell short of reaching the NBA Finals. He later made it to the championship series in 2021 with the Phoenix Suns but concluded his career without a title.
