Christian Pulisic Finally Breaks Scoring Drought in US Victory

After enduring months of frustration due to a scoring drought, Christian Pulisic experienced a welcome breakthrough during the United States men's national team's thrilling 3-2 victory over Senegal. The match marked a significant moment for the Milan midfielder, who had not netted a goal for either club or country in nearly six months.

Prior to this victory, Pulisic's last goal for the national team came on November 19, 2024, in a Nations League clash against Jamaica. As the World Cup approaches, the pressure had mounted, and Pulisic had grown visibly frustrated with repeated inquiries about his lack of goals. Despite this, he consistently maintained his confidence in his abilities and expressed optimism about returning to form.

On Sunday, Pulisic showcased his skill by assisting Sergiño Dest for the opening goal and then scoring a brilliant goal himself, deftly rounding the goalkeeper to finish from a challenging angle, courtesy of a well-placed pass from Ricardo Pepi. His emotional celebration, surrounded by teammates, reflected the relief of breaking his goal drought.

“Hopefully now people can stop talking about it,” Pulisic remarked to reporters, relieved to shift the focus from his struggles to his success. He emphasized his ongoing confidence, stating, “I’ve felt this confidence the whole time. I’ve played really well in recent months.”

Coach Mauricio Pochettino acknowledged Pulisic's positive performance but also mentioned the need for continued improvement. He praised the team's overall commitment but underscored that Pulisic still has potential to grow. “Pulisic’s performance today in 45 minutes was really really good,” Pochettino noted, while also emphasizing the collective effort of the squad.

Teammate Weston McKennie echoed the sentiment, highlighting the importance of support during challenging times. “Any player goes through high and low moments in their career,” McKennie stated. “Christian has shown countless times that he shows up in the moments that we need him the most.” As Pulisic looks ahead to the upcoming World Cup, it remains to be seen if he can maintain this momentum, but for now, he can relish the end of his goal drought.
