Christian Scott Shines in First MLB Win, Earning Praise from Mets' Manager
After 16 starts in the majors, Christian Scott of the New York Mets finally celebrated his first career victory during a solid 6-1 win against the Miami Marlins on Saturday. The 26-year-old pitcher, who made his MLB debut on May 4, 2024, has shown resilience, particularly after missing the entire 2025 season due to Tommy John surgery.
In his latest outing, Scott struck out eight batters and allowed just one run over five innings, improving his record to 1-0 this season with a commendable 2.97 ERA across seven starts. "It's awesome," he reflected post-game. "It took longer than I expected, but it's nice to have that first one under my belt. The defense played great today, and [Hayden] Senger called an excellent game." He added that the offense contributed significantly with some key hits.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza expressed surprise upon learning that Saturday marked Scott's first win, acknowledging the pitcher's impressive performance in 2024. "I didn't know until somebody just told me," Mendoza remarked with a laugh. "He was really good today. The sweeper was effective, and he really attacked with his fastball. It was rewarding to see him secure that first win, and I hope it’s just the beginning." Mendoza emphasized Scott's crucial role for the team, particularly amid injuries affecting the pitching lineup.
Discussing Scott's development since his debut, Mendoza pointed out the improvement in his secondary pitches, which have significantly enhanced his effectiveness on the mound. "When he first came up, he relied heavily on his fastball," he noted. "Now he has a variety of pitches, including a sweeper and a cutter, making him a more versatile pitcher." Scott agreed, highlighting how having multiple pitches at his disposal marks a stark contrast to his earlier struggles.
Mendoza also acknowledged the challenges Scott faced while rehabbing from his injury. "Missing a year-plus can feel isolating," he said. "It's commendable how he's worked hard to get back to this level and contribute to the team's success." Looking ahead, Scott is eager to build on this momentum and hopes the next win will come sooner rather than later. "I just want to go deep into games and give my team a chance to win," he stated, aware of the importance of his role as the season progresses.
