Colombia Triumphs Over Uzbekistan 3-1, Thanks to Stellar Performance by Luis Diaz

Colombia kicked off its 2026 World Cup campaign with a solid 3-1 victory against Uzbekistan on Wednesday, despite a brief moment of uncertainty. Regarded as the favorites, Colombia faced Uzbekistan, a team making its World Cup debut, and had an excellent chance to take the lead in Group K after Portugal’s unexpected draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo earlier that day.

In the first half, Colombia dominated possession, keeping the ball mostly on Uzbekistan's side of the field. They managed to score once before halftime, and it was a stunning goal. Luis Diaz, the star player from Bayern Munich, delivered a precise assist to Daniel Muñoz, who executed a remarkable mid-air finish to find the net.

Uzbekistan made its mark in the second half, achieving its first-ever World Cup goal through Abbosbek Fayzullaev, who headed in a rebound from a blocked shot by Eldor Shomurodov. The match was briefly tied, but Diaz quickly responded with his own first World Cup goal, easing the tension for the predominantly Colombian crowd in Mexico City.

While Uzbekistan sought additional chances during stoppage time, Colombia maintained control, ultimately sealing their victory with a goal from Jáminton Campaz. With this result, Colombia now sits atop Group K, while Portugal and DR Congo each have one point. A win against DR Congo on June 23 would secure Colombia's spot in the knockout stages, while Uzbekistan will face Portugal on the same day.
