Concerns Mount for Padres Following Lucas Giolito's Struggles

SAN DIEGO, CA - On May 23, 2026, Lucas Giolito, wearing the number 55 jersey for the San Diego Padres, took the mound during a matchup against the Oakland Athletics at Petco Park. However, his performance has raised significant concerns among the team's management and fans alike.

The 2026 season commenced on a challenging note for the Padres, particularly with starting pitcher Joe Musgrove sidelined due to an elbow injury sustained during surgery. Shortly after, Nick Pivetta also found himself on the injured list with a flexor tendon strain, while Germán Márquez was placed on the IL following six inconsistent starts, hindered by nerve discomfort in his right forearm. Despite the promising potential of Matt Waldron, who excelled in Triple-A, he too struggled upon his call-up, leading to his placement on the IL.

In light of these setbacks, Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller made the decision to sign Giolito to a one-year contract worth $2.8 million on April 22. Giolito had previously missed the entirety of the 2024 season due to a UCL repair and only made a modest comeback in 2025 with a 10-4 record and a 3.41 ERA for the Boston Red Sox.

Upon joining the Padres, Giolito's pitching repertoire featured a fastball averaging 93 mph, alongside an array of other pitches. However, after four minor league starts, he posted a 4.76 ERA over 17 innings. His first appearance for the Padres on May 17 against Seattle revealed alarming signs; his fastball and other pitches were noticeably slower, and his overall command deteriorated, resulting in a concerning strikeout-to-walk ratio.

With only a limited timeframe to prepare for the season, questions linger about Giolito's ability to regain his previous form. His performance has been marked by frequent walks and difficulty reaching past the fifth inning in his starts. As the Padres grapple with a thin pitching rotation, attention has shifted toward acquiring additional starting pitchers to bolster their chances for a playoff run. The team is currently in a precarious situation, relying heavily on a few starters as they await the return of injured players like Pivetta and Musgrove.
