Corning Secures Fourth Straight Section 4 Softball Championship with Power Hitting
In a commanding display of strength, the top-ranked Class AAA softball team from New York, Corning, clinched its fourth consecutive Section 4 title on Saturday, May 30, by defeating Elmira 12-3 at Greenlight Networks Grand Slam Park in Binghamton. The Hawks showcased their offensive prowess with four home runs, courtesy of Hannah Kauffman, Sophie Schoonover, Emilia Smith, and Lauren DeRosa.
"I thought we started off slower than we have throughout the season, but we were able to get it going with a few home runs and help each other out," said DeRosa, reflecting on the game. Despite a late rally from Elmira, which saw them score three runs in the seventh inning, Corning maintained control, with Matti Johnston pitching the majority of the game before Smith closed it out.
Johnston, the team's only senior, delivered a strong performance, allowing eight hits and striking out nine batters. "Really proud," commented Corning's head coach Mike Johnston Jr. "This is step two, step three of our goals for the year. Now we move to our next step: winning the regionals."
With an undefeated season record of 17-0, Corning is now just four wins away from claiming its third New York State Public High School Athletic Association title, aiming for a second championship in three years. Their next challenge will be against Section 9 runner-up Newburgh Free Academy on Tuesday, June 2.
Corning's success is also attributed to the depth of its lineup, with nine players contributing to the team's 11 hits in the championship game. Johnston led the charge with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, while the home runs from Kauffman, Schoonover, Smith, and DeRosa highlighted the team's offensive capabilities.
DeRosa expressed her enthusiasm about being back on the field after missing last season due to injury. "I love being able to come back and really work together and be able to trust each other," she said, emphasizing the strong team chemistry that has been pivotal to their success. As the Hawks prepare for the next round, they remain focused and motivated, determined to continue their winning streak.
