Cristian Roldan Embraces Seattle Spirit as USMNT Prepares for World Cup Clash

SEATTLE – Soccer has deep roots in Seattle, a city that has cultivated its passion for the sport over decades. From the original Seattle Sounders’ fierce rivalries with the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps during the NASL era to the contemporary successes of Seattle Sounders FC and Seattle Reign FC, soccer is an integral part of the community. The presence of numerous local teams, including the University of Washington’s NCAA championship-winning men's soccer team and USL League Two champions Ballard FC, underscores soccer's prominence in the region.

Cristian Roldan, a pivotal figure in Seattle Sounders history, is back in the Emerald City donning the U.S. Men’s National Team jersey as they gear up for a significant match against Australia. This showdown will mark the USMNT's second encounter in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifications, taking place at Seattle Stadium on Friday. “The soccer culture goes back a long time here in Seattle,” Roldan noted. “We had Pelé in the Tacoma Dome, Messi in the Leagues Cup Final. There's a long history here, as well as with Vancouver and Portland. The soccer landscape is amazing.”

Originally from Pico Rivera, California, Roldan began his soccer journey in Seattle after opting to play for the University of Washington. The 31-year-old midfielder, who has spent his entire professional career with the Sounders since being drafted 16th overall in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, has become Seattle’s all-time leader in appearances among outfield players. His contributions have been vital in securing multiple titles for the club, including the MLS Cup in 2016 and 2019, and the Concacaf Champions Cup in 2022.

As part of the 26-player roster for the USMNT in the upcoming World Cup, Roldan returned to the University of Washington for a training session at Husky Soccer Stadium. Reflecting on his return, he expressed, “I feel at home. I feel like this is where my journey began here in Seattle.” He reminisced about scoring goals during his college days and the memories that have shaped his career.

Seattle Stadium, known for its vibrant atmosphere, will host the USMNT’s first World Cup match in the city since 2016. Roldan anticipates an electrifying crowd, stating, “I fully expect this crowd to be extremely loud, and they're going to energize our group.” With a record for being one of the loudest outdoor sports venues, the stadium is poised to create an unforgettable experience for players and fans alike.

Roldan emphasized the city's enthusiasm for significant matches, recalling past sell-out crowds for major events. “This is probably the biggest game Seattle will have in terms of soccer,” he said, highlighting the importance of the upcoming match. As the USMNT prepares to face Australia, the stage is set for a thrilling display of soccer in a city that lives and breathes the sport.
