Dalton Claims Second Consecutive Regional Title with Shutout Victory Over Mogadore
NORTH RIDGEVILLE − In high-stakes postseason softball, teams often rely heavily on their star pitchers, and Dalton proved this true once again. The Bulldogs captured their second consecutive Division VI regional championship with a 3-0 victory over Mogadore, thanks to a stellar performance from their ace, Mei Simmons.
Simmons, dominating on the mound, pitched the entire game, achieving an impressive 13 strikeouts while allowing only one hit and no earned runs. The junior threw a total of 85 pitches, with 65 strikes, cementing her status as a crucial asset for the Bulldogs, who now hold a record of 23-5. This victory follows her earlier regional semifinal win where she also pitched a complete game against Hillsdale.
“Mei is like a cheat sheet. Having her as our pitcher, she's just really dominant,” remarked Dalton head coach Rob Fiesler. “When you get a lead, you know you can lean on her just to keep everything in control.” Simmons, who has a 16-3 record this season with an ERA of 1.64 and 228 strikeouts, reflected on her previous matchup against Mogadore, where Dalton lost 3-2 in their season opener. "I made sure I worked on my different movement pitches and my change-up," she noted, emphasizing her preparation for this decisive rematch.
While the Bulldogs struggled initially at the plate against Mogadore's sophomore pitcher Natalya Bartholomew, they managed to score strategically. The game’s first run came when leadoff hitter Hannah Wenger crossed home on a wild pitch. Catcher Kenna Doty then contributed two key RBIs in the third and fifth innings that sealed the win for Dalton.
With this victory, Dalton heads to the state semifinals in Akron riding a wave of momentum, having won 21 of their last 22 games, including 10 consecutive wins. “Playing together is our biggest thing,” Simmons stated regarding their successful run. Fiesler added, “These tight games come down to baserunning and timely hitting. We’ve done a really good job with that, and this team is going to continue to excel.”
