Danny Green Advocates for Austin Reaves' Max Contract Potential

The Los Angeles Lakers face a critical decision this offseason regarding the future of standout guard Austin Reaves. As he prepares to enter free agency, Reaves is expected to opt out of his current contract in the coming weeks. According to Tim Bontemps of ESPN, negotiations for a new deal can commence as soon as the NBA Finals conclude.

There is considerable discussion among Lakers supporters regarding the financial terms Reaves should receive for his next contract. He is eligible for a staggering five-year deal worth up to $239 million, and as reported by Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times, Reaves and his agents are seeking a maximum contract.

Former Lakers player Danny Green expressed his support for Reaves during a segment on ESPN L.A. radio. “I am a big Austin Reaves guy, I think he’s very special,” Green stated. He emphasized that Reaves has earned a max contract, although he acknowledged the challenges of constructing a championship-caliber team. Green referenced Jalen Brunson's contract journey as a potential lesson, suggesting that while players often do not take pay cuts, it might be possible for Reaves to consider it in the future. He added, “I would love for him to stay a Laker and be with Luka; it would be fun to keep watching them grow together.”

During the regular season, Reaves averaged 23.3 points and 5.5 assists per game, showing consistent improvement in his scoring over the last four years. However, his performance in the playoffs was less impressive, particularly after returning from an oblique strain, marking the second consecutive postseason in which his scoring numbers dipped.

Concerns linger among fans regarding his playoff struggles, defensive capabilities, and injury history, as he played in 51 games during the regular season. Despite these issues, Reaves remains a crucial component of the Lakers' aspirations for a championship, making his potential departure a significant concern for the team.
