Danny Green Reflects on the Challenges of Winning the Lakers' 2020 Championship
The Los Angeles Lakers' 2020 NBA championship continues to face skepticism, primarily because it was secured during the COVID-19 pandemic in a secured bubble at Walt Disney World Resort. However, for those who were part of that team, the difficulties of clinching the title amid such unique circumstances are well understood. Danny Green, a vital 3-and-D player for the Lakers, shared his perspective in a recent Bleacher Report video, emphasizing that this championship was the most challenging of his career.
"It was by far the hardest championship that I had to achieve," Green stated. He elaborated on the mental and emotional strains of competing in the bubble, where family and friends were largely absent, limiting opportunities to celebrate the victory. “We went to the same restaurant that we go to every day and celebrated as a team but, after that, no real parade. So, it was just different,” he noted, highlighting how the isolation took its toll on players.
Green also mentioned the strict regulations surrounding player interactions and movement, which added to the overall tension within the bubble. The tragic passing of Lakers legend Kobe Bryant in January 2020 further complicated the situation. "It might’ve been the only year that I was a favorite to win it," he reflected, acknowledging the heightened expectations and scrutiny the team faced as they sought to honor Bryant's legacy.
Throughout the playoffs, the Lakers displayed remarkable dominance, defeating the Portland Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets, and Denver Nuggets in succession, each in five games. They ultimately triumphed over the Miami Heat in the finals, securing the championship in six games. Despite initial doubts regarding the bubble format, the NBA successfully executed the playoffs, offering a much-needed distraction during a tumultuous year.
