Darron Lee Faces First-Degree Murder Charges in Girlfriend's Death

Former NFL linebacker Darron Lee has been charged with first-degree murder following the death of his girlfriend. A grand jury in Hamilton County, Tennessee, returned the indictment on June 9. This decision followed the prosecution's choice to withdraw a previous charge of tampering with evidence, as stated by Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp. "The State dismissed the tampering with evidence charge," Wamp informed WTVC. "We will focus solely on the murder."

If convicted of first-degree murder, Lee could face a life sentence, with the possibility of the death penalty being considered in the upcoming weeks. The allegations stem from the death of his girlfriend, whose body was discovered in a rented residence in Ooltewah, located east of Chattanooga. Emergency responders attempted to revive the victim upon their arrival but were unsuccessful.

Lee was taken into custody after being identified as a suspect. He was denied bail following testimony from Detective Brian Lockhart, who indicated that Lee was present in the home when deputies arrived. Lockhart noted that Lee claimed his girlfriend had fallen in the shower due to narcolepsy, but further investigation revealed inconsistencies with this account.

An autopsy indicated that the victim had suffered "severe injuries, including severe brain trauma, a broken neck, bruising across her body, a large bite mark on her shoulder and thigh, stab wounds to her legs, and significant facial trauma." Cleaning supplies, including bleach wipes and a spray bottle, were also discovered at the scene, which initially led to the tampering charge.

During preliminary hearings, prosecutors presented various pieces of evidence, including body camera footage and testimonies from investigators. Notably, Lee allegedly sought medical advice from ChatGPT, an AI chatbot, instead of contacting authorities, asking whether a fall could result in specific injuries. Lee remains incarcerated at the Hamilton County Jail without bond and is scheduled to appear in court on June 17.
