Declan Rice: Arsenal's Loss in UCL Final Will Not Define Our Future
Declan Rice has expressed optimism that Arsenal's recent defeat in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain will not overshadow the team's potential for future success. The Gunners faced a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss in Budapest, dashing their hopes for a historic double and their first Champions League title.
The tightly contested match ended 1-1 after extra time, with Arsenal initially taking the lead through Kai Havertz before Ousmane Dembélé equalized for PSG from the penalty spot. In the shootout, both Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhães missed their attempts, allowing PSG to secure their second consecutive Champions League trophy, making them only the second team in the competition's history to achieve back-to-back victories.
Despite the disappointment, Rice remains hopeful about Arsenal's trajectory under manager Mikel Arteta. Reflecting on the night, he noted, "The emotions and the stakes are so high. It's cruel... We keep building. Since I came to the club it was a quarter-final exit, then semi-final, and now final. We keep going and keep staying positive. This isn't going to define us."
Rice also pointed out a controversial moment in extra time when Noni Madueke fell in the box after a challenge from Nuno Mendes, suggesting that it could have warranted a penalty. However, he chose not to dwell on the incident, stating, "At the time I was devastated... I thought as the game went on we grew into it and created a number of chances."
Looking to the future, Rice emphasized that while PSG has experienced their share of setbacks in the past, Arsenal too will learn and grow from this experience. "We are having our small losses, but we are going to go on and keep pushing," he said. This loss may sting, but for Rice and his teammates, it is merely a stepping stone on their journey.
