Denny Hamlin Triumphs at Michigan, Erik Jones Gains Ground in Chase Race

Denny Hamlin made a triumphant return at the NASCAR event on June 7, held at Michigan International Speedway, successfully defending his title from 2025. Starting from the back of the pack, Hamlin cruised through the race, particularly dominating the final 40 laps to secure the FireKeepers Casino 400 with an impressive 11-second lead over Erik Jones. This victory marked Hamlin's 63rd career win, tying him with Kyle Busch for ninth place on the all-time list and adding to his three wins this season.

Jones, who had a solid performance the previous week in Nashville, finished second at Michigan, showcasing his long-run speed. He edged through the top ten in the closing laps and fell just short of claiming a stage victory against Chase Elliott. Now positioned 18th in points, just 18 points away from the critical 16th spot, Jones is eyeing a potential Chase berth as the summer progresses.

In terms of safety, NASCAR’s regulations were put to the test during a dramatic collision on Lap 148, where Christopher Bell made hard contact with the wall after colliding with Chase Elliott. The incident, which caused significant damage to both the car and the track, showcased the effectiveness of the SAFER barrier, allowing both drivers to exit their vehicles unharmed. NASCAR's communications VP Mike Forde praised the organization's ongoing efforts to enhance safety in the sport.

On the downside, Brad Keselowski faced another disappointing result, finishing 34th after two incidents curtailed his race. Currently in 15th place and just 21 points above the Chase cutline, he faces pressure as the series heads to Pocono. Meanwhile, Ryan Preece encountered a third consecutive DNF, finishing 28th after being caught in a multi-car wreck, leaving him in 19th in the points standings. The RFK Racing team needs to find its footing as they head into the next race.
