Deposit-Hancock and Susquehanna Valley Secure Softball Championships
On Saturday, May 30, at Greenlight Networks Grand Slam Park in Binghamton, both Deposit-Hancock and Susquehanna Valley upheld their dominance in Section 4 softball by clinching championship titles. Deposit-Hancock achieved its sixth consecutive championship with a narrow 3-2 victory over Union Springs in the Class C final, marking a remarkable total of 11 straight titles when including their solo victories.
In the Class B final, Susquehanna Valley celebrated its third consecutive sectional title by defeating Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour with a score of 8-3. The win underscores the Sabers' strong performance this season.
In the Class C showdown, Deposit-Hancock (20-2) managed to tie the game in the fifth inning, scoring two runs, the first of which resulted from an error. Teeghan Tarbox, who had singled earlier in the inning, crossed home plate for the winning run after a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh. Union Springs initially took a lead with a two-run homer from Abbi Traci, who finished the game with a 2-for-3 performance.
Aubrey Smith pitched 5 1/3 innings for Deposit-Hancock, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out five. Jordan Diemer came in for relief, throwing 1 2/3 hitless innings and adding two strikeouts. On the other side, Gracie Chalupnicki pitched six innings for Union Springs, giving up two unearned runs before Paityn Delaney took the mound for the seventh.
Looking ahead, Deposit-Hancock will compete against the winner of the Section 5 vs. Section 6 matchup in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association regional final on Friday, June 5, at Gates-Chili High School. Meanwhile, Susquehanna Valley (18-3) is set to face Section 10's Norwood-Norfolk in a sub-regional match on Tuesday, June 2, at 4 p.m. at Greenlight Park.
