Deshaun Watson Reflects on Fan Reaction After Injury During 2024 Season
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson made headlines recently, addressing the negative reactions from fans following an injury that marked a low point in the team's 2024 season. During their Week Seven matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, Watson suffered an Achilles tear, leaving him incapacitated on the field and prompting an unexpected response from the crowd—booing as he was carted off.
This incident stands out in the memories of Browns fans, who typically show solidarity with injured players. Yet, in this instance, many expressed their frustration with Watson's performance and the team's struggles. Now, as he prepares for the 2026 NFL season, Watson is focusing on moving forward.
When asked about the booing, Watson expressed his stance on fan opinions, saying, “At the end of the day, I can’t control what people support. I think that’s their own opinion, and I think that all I can do is put out the person I am, showcase who I am as a person, as a player, as a teammate, and what I represent as an individual.” He emphasized his commitment to improving his performance rather than dwelling on outside criticism.
Since joining the Browns on a lucrative five-year, $230 million contract in 2022, Watson has faced challenges, appearing in only 19 games and throwing for 3,365 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. His 2025 season was completely derailed due to injury, leading the team to utilize three different quarterbacks during his absence.
With a new offensive coordinator in Todd Monken, Watson is competing for the starting quarterback position against Shedeur Sanders, who took over last season. Reflecting on his mental state, Watson remarked, “I’m in a way better space, and I’ve matured. I’m in a great position, and again, I’m in a great space, and I’m happy, enjoying life.”
