Diamond Dawgs Stand One Victory Away from Super Regionals

Athens, GA - The Georgia Bulldogs have positioned themselves just a step away from the Super Regionals after a decisive 6-2 victory over Liberty University on Saturday night at Foley Field. Following an unusual start to the day, where they had to finish a suspended game against Long Island, the Diamond Dawgs showcased their strength and resilience on the field.

Georgia's journey began with the completion of a lopsided game against Long Island, which had been halted due to inclement weather while the Bulldogs were leading 15-1. After resuming play Saturday morning, they secured an 18-2 win, tying a school record with nine home runs, while pitcher Joey Volchko delivered an impressive six shutout innings.

Despite being the No. 3 national seed, SEC champions, and regional hosts, Georgia had to compete as the visiting team against Liberty, according to NCAA postseason regulations. Nevertheless, the Bulldogs quickly took control of the game with Dan Jackson launching a two-run homer in the first inning, followed by solo shots from Kenny Ishikawa and Ryan Wynn in the third, putting Georgia ahead 4-2.

Shortstop Kolby Branch praised his teammate Ryan Wynn, stating, “We’ve always known that Ryan can get it done and come up in big spots. He’s a great player.” The Bulldogs continued to extend their lead with additional home runs from Rylan Lujo and Brennan Hudson, solidifying their victory.

Georgia's pitching staff also rose to the occasion after starter Dylan Vigue struggled, allowing two runs before exiting early. Matt Scott stepped in, delivering five scoreless innings, while Justin Byrd wrapped up the game with four strikeouts, including a critical moment in the seventh inning when he escaped a bases-loaded situation.

Head coach Wes Johnson commended his team's performance, particularly highlighting Scott's crucial role in maintaining momentum. With the win, Georgia can now rest and prepare for their next challenge against the winner of Sunday's match between Liberty and Boston College, needing just one victory to secure their place in the Super Regionals.
