Diamondbacks Make Roster Changes Amid Struggles at the Plate
Winslow, Arizona, is home to the famous Meteor Crater, a natural wonder formed approximately 50,000 years ago. This massive crater, measuring 560 feet in depth and three-quarters of a mile in diameter, has become a significant attraction for tourists.
In recent updates from the Arizona Diamondbacks, the team has made some roster adjustments as they grapple with a disappointing offensive performance. Outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. has been reinstated from the 10-day injured list, recovering from a strained left hamstring. To make room for him, outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt has been optioned back to Triple-A Reno after a notable decline in his performance, which has seen his OPS+ drop to 87 this season.
Despite Gurriel's return, his recent stats are concerning; he posted a disappointing OPS+ of 65 over the span of 25 games. Waldschmidt's struggles, combined with the lack of options for Jorge Barrosa, have left the team facing tough decisions regarding their roster. As the Diamondbacks seek a much-needed boost in their batting lineup, they find themselves having scored just 36 runs in 13 games this month, an alarming statistic for the franchise.
This June marks one of the lowest offensive outputs in team history, with the collective batting average sitting at .203—ranking as the third lowest ever for the month. The only other time the team averaged fewer than three runs per game was in May 2018. With a current sOPS+ of only 69, the offensive struggles are evident, trailing behind even the dismal figures from that May 2018 slump.
Currently, only three players—Corbin Carroll, Gabriel Moreno, and Geraldo Perdomo—hold an OPS above .700 for the month, while Ildemaro Vargas, who once earned NL Player of the Month honors, is struggling significantly, going just 1-for-25 in June. The Diamondbacks hope that the return of Gurriel and potential adjustments can turn their fortunes around.
