Duke-Michigan Basketball Game Relocated to Miami's LoanDepot Park
A broadcasting conflict has led to the relocation of a highly anticipated matchup between Duke and Michigan, initially set for Madison Square Garden, to LoanDepot Park, the home of the Miami Marlins. This change comes as a result of a disagreement over media rights between the involved parties.
In April, Amazon Prime Video secured a deal with Duke to broadcast three neutral-site games, including the December 21 clash against Michigan in New York. The arrangement was facilitated by ESPN, which holds the rights to ACC broadcasts. Duke has also pledged to participate in upcoming ESPN events during the 2027–28 and 2028–29 seasons. However, the coordination with other teams’ media rights holders was lacking.
The Big Ten has claimed territorial control over non-conference games in specific regions, which includes New York City, according to CBS Sports' Matt Norlander. This territorial control created a conflict with the previously established deal between Duke and ESPN.
Consequently, Duke and Michigan have opted to move their game to LoanDepot Park. While the agreement is still pending finalization, reports indicate that it is likely to proceed. The decision to utilize a baseball stadium stems from Michigan head coach Dusty May’s relationship with Marlins owner Bruce Sherman, who had previously considered hosting Florida Atlantic at the venue after its successful run in the NCAA Tournament.
As streaming platforms increasingly pursue rights to live sports events, this situation underscores the complexities that arise from overlapping broadcast agreements. Navigating these territorial regulations will be essential for streamers aiming to establish their presence in a traditionally structured media landscape.
