Emeka Egbuka Aims for Big Plays in His Sophomore NFL Season

Emeka Egbuka made history in 2025 as the first wide receiver drafted in the first round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers since the selection of Mike Evans in 2014. The Buccaneers picked Egbuka at No. 19 overall from Ohio State, and he made an impressive debut in his rookie season. However, his performance waned significantly towards the end of the year.

As he prepares for his second season, Egbuka is determined to recapture the momentum he had in the early part of his career. During a mandatory minicamp on June 17, he shared his focus for the upcoming season. "Overall explosiveness and making big plays with the ball in my hands," Egbuka stated, emphasizing the importance of developing good habits in catching and running post-catch. "Making moves on defenders, having strong hands at the catch point, staying on your feet is a big one, and that’s something that I’m really honing in on."

In the first 10 games of his rookie year, Egbuka was a standout player, accumulating 45 receptions for 717 yards (averaging 15.9 yards per catch) and scoring six touchdowns. Due to injuries to teammates Mike Evans, Chris Godwin Jr., and Jalen McMillan, he became the primary target for quarterback Baker Mayfield, being targeted an average of 8.5 times per game and surpassing 100 receiving yards in three separate outings.

However, Egbuka's production sharply declined in the latter half of the season, where he recorded only 18 receptions for 221 yards and failed to score a touchdown. His targets dwindled to six per game, and he managed no more than four catches in those final seven games.

Despite being just in his second year, Egbuka is stepping up as a leader, especially following Evans' departure to the San Francisco 49ers. "Something that is little less on the field is stepping into that leadership role, becoming more vocal," he remarked, aiming to be a reliable source of confidence for his teammates.

With Chris Godwin now the veteran presence in the receiving corps, Egbuka will share the field with fellow young receivers including Jalen McMillan, Tez Johnson, and Kameron Jonson, who have all made notable impacts early in their careers. The Buccaneers also welcomed rookie Ted Hurst III, drafted in the third round, adding further youth to the lineup.

Head coach Todd Bowles praised Egbuka's readiness for the upcoming season, noting, "He was nonstop [in 2025] and he looks a little fresher, looks a little more relaxed and calm but he is exactly the same way he was last year from a preparation standpoint." Bowles highlighted Egbuka's intelligence and preparedness, indicating that he is excited for the challenges ahead.
