Emotional Tribute to Kyle Busch at Charlotte Motor Speedway by Family
On Monday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Brexton Busch, the son of the late NASCAR driver Kyle Busch, made his debut in the Young Lions division of the CookOut Summer Shootout, finishing in sixth place. Just a night later, his grandfather, Tom Busch, took to the track in a poignant tribute, driving the No. 51 Legends Car that Kyle was meant to race in the Masters Division.
In a touching moment for grassroots racing, Tom Busch participated in a “missing man” formation during the pre-race pace laps. As the rest of the drivers parked on pit road, the 72-year-old took an honorary solo lap in remembrance of his son. Brexton, positioned in the flagstand, began the race by waving the green flag and later signaled the end with a double-checkered flag as his grandfather completed the lap, revving the engine down the front stretch.
Legends cars, where many future NASCAR stars such as Chase Elliott and Joey Logano first honed their skills, played a significant role in Kyle Busch's early career, starting out in Las Vegas. The two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion passed away on May 21 at the age of 41 due to complications from severe pneumonia that led to sepsis, leaving a profound impact on the NASCAR community. Drivers continue to pay respects, with Denny Hamlin recently honoring him by flying a stylized No. 18 flag during his victory lap at Michigan.
Tom Busch has a rich history in racing, having been a mechanic in Las Vegas who nurtured the talents of his sons, Kyle and Kurt, both of whom became successful drivers. Reflecting on their early years, he remarked, “I like it now a lot better than in the old days when I owned both cars. They raced each other so hard... we didn’t have enough parts to race two cars.”
Kyle and Kurt Busch are recognized as the most successful brothers in NASCAR, with a combined total of 97 Cup Series wins and three championships. Kurt was recently inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, further solidifying their legacy in the sport.
