Eric Cole Leads Charles Schwab Challenge with Impressive 7-Under 63

Eric Cole has tied A.J. Ewart for the lowest individual round at Colonial Country Club during the Charles Schwab Challenge, finishing his third round with a striking 7-under 63. The 37-year-old golfer is now positioned in the clubhouse as he aims for his first PGA Tour victory.

In an interview with CBS following his round, Cole expressed his excitement, saying, "The course has a lot of history, so many great players and champions here. I am very excited to start the challenge tomorrow." Looking ahead to the final round, he noted, "Obviously that worked pretty well today," referring to his successful performance on Moving Day.

Cole's recent form has seen him finish in the top 10 in two of his last three tournaments, and he is set to claim a substantial $1.7 million prize along with 500 FedEx Cup points if he secures the win. Reflecting on his round, he remarked, "One of those days where everything went right, I got off to a good start and it just turned into a bunch of birdies. It's going to be hard to back this up."

As the final round unfolds at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, Cole shares the spotlight with fellow contenders Mac Meissner and Alex Smalley, all of whom are vying for their first Tour title. Additionally, reigning U.S. Open champion J.J. Spaun seeks to regain his confidence ahead of the upcoming tournament at Shinnecock Hills.

Cole is well aware of the challenges that lie ahead. "It's not going to be an easy day tomorrow, I know that from my experience," he acknowledged, recalling a playoff loss earlier this year. Meanwhile, Meissner, a Texas native, enjoys the support of local fans as he prepares for the final round.

The leaderboard is tightly packed, with Cole holding a two-stroke advantage at 12 under par. He'll face competition not only from Meissner and Spaun but also needs to keep an eye on 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama, who will be looking to improve his performance after a lackluster Moving Day.
