Evaluating the Prospects of NFL's Second-Year Quarterbacks in 2026
The initial adjustment period for the 2025 NFL Draft's quarterback class has concluded, and fans are eager to assess how these players will fare in their sophomore seasons. In a recent episode of the "Football 301" podcast on Yahoo Sports, analysts Nate Tice and Matt Harmon examined several notable quarterbacks entering their second year, from first overall pick Cam Ward to fifth-round selection Shedeur Sanders, revealing a spectrum of potential developments.
Cam Ward, now with the Tennessee Titans, had a rookie season that didn’t generate any standout statistics. However, Tice and Harmon acknowledged that Ward faced challenging circumstances, including inexperienced receivers and an unstable coaching staff. Despite these obstacles, Ward displayed promising attributes such as effective pocket awareness, a readiness to take risks, and creativity in his throws. With the addition of first-round rookie receiver Carnell Tate and improvements in his supporting cast, both analysts anticipate a significant progression in Ward's second year, which could address lingering questions about his potential as a starter, even if he doesn’t reach elite status just yet.
Jaxson Dart, playing for the New York Giants, showed glimpses of his athleticism and resilience during a tough rookie campaign. He was particularly effective as a runner and demonstrated his ability to create plays, though he often took unnecessary hits and needs to enhance his passing consistency, especially on intermediate throws. Tice likened him to a raw version of Russell Wilson or Justin Fields, highlighting his substantial upside if he can refine his game management. The new coaching approach under Greg Roman and Matt Nagy is expected to leverage his running abilities, but Dart must make significant improvements in his passing game.
Tyler Shough of the New Orleans Saints is viewed by both analysts as the most reliable option for success in his second season. At 27 years old, he has demonstrated composure, sound decision-making, and a strong football IQ. While he may not have the same ceiling as Ward or Dart, his quick release and compatibility with the Saints' enhanced offensive strategy position him as a dependable starter. However, concerns about his sack rate and performance under pressure remain important factors to monitor.
Lastly, Shedeur Sanders, now with the Cleveland Browns, faced challenges during his rookie year, struggling statistically and suffering from poor pass protection and unreliable receiving targets. Lacking elite athleticism and arm strength, he needs to play with greater speed and decisiveness. Analysts suggest he may be best suited as a developmental backup at this stage, as he showed enough potential to compete for a backup spot. However, unless he can address his processing issues and physical limitations, his prospects of becoming a starting quarterback seem limited. Tice noted similarities between Sanders' statistical performance and that of Mitchell Trubisky.
