Florida Gators Secure Commitment from Oregon State Pitcher Trey Morris
The Florida Gators baseball team has successfully recruited one of the top pitchers available in the transfer portal. Trey Morris, a left-handed pitcher from Oregon State, announced his decision to join the Gators via Instagram on June 16. Morris, who achieved recognition as a freshman All-American, will reunite with his former pitching coach, Rich Dorman, recently appointed to Florida's coaching staff.
Standing at 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 251 pounds, Morris had an impressive season with the Beavers, boasting a 1.98 ERA, a 0.83 WHIP, and an undefeated record of 7-0 across eight starts and 16 appearances. Over 59 innings, he surrendered just 13 earned runs on 34 hits, issued 15 walks, and tallied 67 strikeouts. His stellar performance earned him First-Team Freshman All-American honors from both Perfect Game and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Morris brings a versatile pitching arsenal to the Gators, featuring a low-90s fastball, a mid-80s changeup with a 61.3% whiff rate during the regular season, as well as a slider and curveball. His arrival comes at a crucial time for Florida, which had only one left-handed pitcher on its roster last season. The team's primary lefty, Ernesto Lugo-Canchola, made 30 appearances but ended with a 5.77 ERA.
Before Morris's commitment, the Gators had retained only sophomore Jackson Hoyt as a left-handed option, following the departure of other lefties Rivers Kurland, McCall Biemiller, and Eli Blair, who have entered the transfer portal. This new addition is expected to bolster Florida's pitching lineup for the upcoming season.
