Get Ready for Another Saints QB Battle

Around this time last year, the New Orleans Saints had a completely open spot at QB. Looking back now, it's crazy to think about, but everyone was unsure what would happen with the starting spot, which created a heated battle between Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler.

Investing a second-round pick in Shough made him the favorite, but throughout camp and preseason, it was clear this battle was too close to call. Because of that, the Saints ended up going with Rattler, which made sense at the time.

During his starts, it was fine, but not good enough to get this team wins. In the end, Rattler was benched for Shough, and the Saints have not looked back since. When the season ended, Rattler's name ran rampant in trade rumors, but a deal never materialized. The Saints really value Rattler, so giving up for nothing would make little sense, and he does have a chance to improve in New Orleans.

For this year's camp season, it's clear that Shough is the starter, but the backup spot is wide open. In the offseason, the Saints have brought in former first-round pick Zach Wilson, a move that should not be disregarded. Yes, Wilson's time in New York and every other team he has been on has not been the best, but this addition was all about potential. Again, Wilson is a former top-10 pick in the NFL Draft, and he has talent to tap into, but he just has not been able to do so. With that being the case, he has had to take backup roles with teams, and for the Saints, he will be fighting for that.

In this year's offseason, the Saints are going to have a very close QB battle between Rattler and Wilson. Already, Rattler has the upper hand because of his time in New Orleans, the chemistry he has with the staff and players, and he was the better QB last season. Still, the staff must go into this battle with a completely clean slate, just like they had last year. It will allow bias to go away and the best decision to be made. Wilson will have an oppurtunity to prove his worth to the Saints throughout camp and preseason, and if both Rattler and Wilson play well, it's going to be really good for New Orleans.

The Saints will now have a high-level backup, and the odd man out can improve his value for trades. Getting a pick from Rattler or Wilson would be very smart business for the Saints.
