It appears Giancarlo Stanton is nowhere near a return for the New York Yankees

The designated hitter has been out with a calf strain since April 24.

Last month, manager Aaron Boone said that Stanton suffered a setback in his recovery. But that wasn't the whole story.

On Thursday, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman provided clarity on Stanton's "setback," saying that, instead, the 36-year-old is dealing with a new injury to his calf.

“He had a new injury, so it kind of resets the whole thing,” Cashman told reporters, including The Athletic's Chris Kirschner at Tropicana Field in Tampa, Fla.

“Ultimately, it was an unfortunate circumstance. Certainly we’d love to have him in that lineup, being the weapon that he is," Cashman added. "But we have to let it heal. We have to give it the time it takes, and unfortunately, it takes time.”

Before Stanton's injury, he hit .256/.302/.422 with three home runs and a .724 OPS in 24 games.

He has not surpassed 114 games played since appearing in 139 contests during the 2021 season.

Based on Cashman's update, Yankees fans should not expect Stanton back on the field for quite some time.

The Yankees' lineup is also without Aaron Judge, who will undergo re-imaging of his fractured rib during the All-Star break.
