Guardians Edge Tigers in Series Opener with Power and Pitching

Cleveland – After showcasing their power with six home runs and 11 runs just a day earlier, the Detroit Tigers struggled to replicate that success, managing only two solo home runs in a 3-2 defeat against the Cleveland Guardians on Friday at Progressive Field. This marked the Guardians' fifth consecutive victory over the Tigers this season, kicking off a three-game weekend series.

In a concerning twist, the Tigers may have lost pitcher Jack Flaherty to an injury. Flaherty departed the game after the third inning due to discomfort in his left leg, as confirmed by the team. He threw 63 pitches, including a challenging 30-pitch second inning that saw him yield two runs. Catcher Patrick Bailey, who had been hitting .154, contributed a crucial two-out, two-strike RBI single and later scored on a triple by ninth-place hitter Brayan Rocchio.

Flaherty’s night ended abruptly when he stumbled while fielding a high chopper from Kyle Manzardo, though the team clarified that his discomfort was not related to this play. His exit forced the Tigers to rely on four relievers for the remainder of the game, a tough situation for the first contest of a six-game road trip. "We understand whatever happens tonight, there’s going to be another game tomorrow," said manager AJ Hinch before the game.

Right-handed pitcher Jacob Waguespack, who was just promoted from Triple-A Toledo, and lefty Drew Sommers each delivered a scoreless inning. However, the Guardians extended their lead to 3-1 in the sixth inning with an RBI single from Steven Kwan off Drew Anderson. Ty Madden added a scoreless seventh and eighth, striking out the side in the latter.

Despite having their pitching hold up, the Tigers’ offense struggled to make a significant impact. Cleveland’s defense shone throughout the game, with Rocchio making an impressive over-the-shoulder catch and Chase DeLauter executing a diving grab. The Tigers did hit a couple of home runs, including a 418-foot blast by James Outman in his first at-bat after joining the team, and a 416-foot shot from Spencer Torkelson. However, they fell short in their attempts to tie the game, with a near-miss from rookie Kevin McGonigle in the eighth inning, caught at the wall by DeLauter. Closer Cade Smith secured the win for the Guardians in the ninth.
