Heartbreak for Monroe County Softball Teams as Season Concludes

The softball season came to a disappointing end for three teams from Monroe County, with both Airport and Whiteford suffering narrow defeats in the state quarterfinals, while Summerfield faced a loss of their own. In a dramatic finish, both Airport and Whiteford held a 3-1 advantage heading into the sixth inning, only to see their hopes dashed by a three-run rally from their opponents.

In Division 2, Airport lost to Farmington Hills Mercy, while Whiteford fell to the defending state champions, Grass Lake, in Division 3. Summerfield’s outing ended with an 8-4 defeat against Mendon, who is also a reigning champion in Division 4.

At Willis, Airport’s Brooklyn Martin contributed significantly with a double that drove in a run, and teammate Peyton Zajac followed with a single that extended their lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning. However, Mercy’s comeback in the sixth proved decisive. “I told the girls this doesn’t define what these seniors have done,” remarked Airport coach Jess Irwin, noting the team’s accomplishments throughout the season. Despite leaving seven runners on base and committing two errors, Martin finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

In Novi, Whiteford faced Grass Lake, where the winning rally came without any hits, relying instead on walks and a hit batter. Whiteford coach Matt VanBrandt acknowledged the challenges his team faced, stating, “We didn’t play clean enough to defeat the defending champs.” The team, which finished the season at 23-12, celebrated the leadership of seniors Bailey Spradling and Addeson Cousino, who guided their younger teammates through a successful campaign that included multiple championships.

Lastly, in Battle Creek, Summerfield’s Brea Olmsted shone bright with a home run and three RBIs, while Mia Samples added two hits. The Bulldogs managed to score three runs in their final inning but ultimately concluded their season at 20-13. This year’s playoffs served as a testament to the resilience and spirit of the Monroe County teams, despite their heartbreaking exits.
