Howie Roseman Defends Trade of A.J. Brown for Future Draft Picks

Following the Eagles' decision to trade wide receiver A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots on Monday, General Manager Howie Roseman addressed the media to clarify the rationale behind this move. The Eagles acquired a first-round pick for 2028 along with a fifth-round pick for 2027 in exchange for Brown, who had expressed a desire to leave the team.

Roseman emphasized that a first-round pick's value remains consistent, regardless of the year it is issued. "For us to take a 2026 pick, and that’s a late first-round pick, and obviously also have to deal with the cap consequences that come with making a trade prior to June 1, it made some sense for us to look at future picks," he explained. He reiterated, "We’ve always been in the mindset a pick is a pick — a first-round pick is a first-round pick. Doesn’t matter. Teams are still going to be playing football in 2028."

While many analysts suggest that future first-round picks are often viewed as equivalent to current second-round selections, there is potential for the 2028 pick to gain value if the Patriots struggle in 2027. This could result in a much higher selection than what the Eagles would have received in 2026. However, no one can accurately predict the talent level of the 2028 draft class at this stage.

It's clear that the Eagles would have preferred to secure a first-round pick for the 2027 draft. Nevertheless, Roseman considers it a victory to obtain any first-round selection for a player who was no longer a fit with the team. "I think from our perspective, getting a first-round pick for our team, having two first-round picks in ‘28 is a huge, huge part of this move," he remarked. "Those picks are the most valuable things that you can add as you’re building your team."

The Eagles' trade of Brown comes after a successful four-year tenure that included a Super Bowl victory, but it also represents a missed opportunity to cultivate talent through the initial pick they traded away in 2022. Now, they look ahead to the future with renewed hope for their draft strategy.
