Humidity Causes Light Malfunction During Smokies Playoff Game
A single drop of water was responsible for a brief lighting issue at Covenant Health Park during the Knoxville Smokies' crucial game on June 18. This incident occurred in the third inning of a playoff-critical matchup, where condensation from an air conditioning vent dripped onto the lighting control monitor, leading to the malfunction.
As Smokies pitcher Dawson Netz prepared to throw an 0-1 pitch to Cam Collier of the Lookouts in a scoreless game, the stadium lights began to flicker, creating a momentary illusion of a home run celebration. However, it was simply a consequence of the high humidity that had plagued the game, which had already experienced a rain delay before it began.
The lights flickered for less than a minute, prompting the umpires to gather and deliberate on how to proceed. Home plate umpire Derek Gibson consulted with his crew and determined that the pitch would be ruled a dead ball, as per official baseball rule 5.12(b)(1), which states that any play can be declared dead if lighting issues hinder the umpires' ability to follow the action.
To address the problem, a dry towel was placed over the monitor, and Netz continued to dominate, striking out Collier on three pitches. In the following inning, the Lookouts broke the scoreless tie with a solo home run from former Smokies player Pablo Aliendo. However, the Smokies quickly responded with three consecutive solo home runs from Jefferson Rojas, Owen Ayers, and Andy Garriola, each celebrated by the intentionally flashing lights of the stadium.
This game was significant for the Smokies as they sought to secure their playoff position, making the lighting glitch all the more impactful amid the tension of the match.
