Indiana Pacers Eye Future Trades After Draft Lottery Setback
CHICAGO – The Indiana Pacers face a challenging situation as they head into the 2026 NBA Draft without any picks. Following their disappointing results in the recent NBA Draft Lottery, the team lost their first-round selection, which they had traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in February as part of a deal to acquire Ivica Zubac. Additionally, their second-round pick is now in the hands of the Memphis Grizzlies due to previous transactions dating back to 2021, leaving the Pacers alongside the Portland Trail Blazers as the only teams without a selection for this upcoming draft.
The Pacers were hoping to secure a top-four pick in 2026, as this year's draft class is regarded as particularly promising. However, with their first-round pick gone, team President Kevin Pritchard indicated that the franchise still maintains options for the future. "We have some flexibility. We have five of our next six years [of first-round draft picks]," Pritchard stated, emphasizing that they are not in a position like other teams that have fully committed their assets.
Despite the setback, the Pacers still hold five future first-round picks, specifically for the years 2027, 2028, 2030, 2031, and 2032. Notably, their 2029 pick was also traded to the Clippers and is unprotected, meaning it cannot be reclaimed. Indiana has not made a first-round selection since 2023, when they drafted Jarace Walker and Ben Sheppard, and they will have to wait until 2027 to make another pick.
According to the NBA's Stepien Rule, a team cannot go consecutive drafts without a first-round selection, which currently prevents the Pacers from trading their 2027 pick until after the 2026 Draft concludes on June 24. This rule allows for future flexibility in trading, as the Pacers will be able to move picks for 2027 and beyond once the upcoming draft is over.
With the potential to trade their 2027, 2031, 2032, and 2033 picks starting June 25, the Pacers have a critical decision ahead. They have the opportunity to enhance their current roster by acquiring immediate talent, while also needing to consider the long-term development of their young players. How they navigate this situation will be crucial in shaping the future of the franchise.
