IPL playoffs format explained: What are qualifiers and eliminators in Indian Premier League?
The playoffs mark the knockout phase of an Indian Premier League (IPL) season, and it's no different with the 2026 edition coming to the business end.
When all matches in the league phase have been played, the top four teams in the points table advance to the playoffs, where the champion team is determined.
Instead of the semi-final format used in conventional competitions, in IPL playoffs, a team that has finished first or second gets two chances to play in the final, whereas the teams placed third and fourth will have knock-out matches.
In this article, The Sporting News explains what the Qualifiers and the Eliminator mean, along with the format and rules they are played in.

What is Qualifier 1 in IPL?
Qualifiers 1 is played among those teams who stand at the top two positions in the league rankings. The winner of this game qualifies automatically to participate in the IPL final.
Whereas the loser of this game doesn’t get eliminated, rather gets an opportunity to qualify to the IPL final by playing another Qualifier game. Hence, a top-two finish in league phase holds great significance for any team.

How does the IPL final work?
The IPL final match features:
- Winner of Qualifier 1 match
- Winner of Qualifier 2 match
The victorious team wins the IPL championship title.
| Match | Teams involved | What happens? |

| Eliminator | 3rd vs 4th | Loser eliminated, winner advances |
| Qualifier 2 | Loser of Q1 vs Winner of Eliminator | Winner reaches final |

Why does IPL use qualifiers and eliminators instead of semi-finals?
This particular system favours those teams which perform well throughout the league match stage. Being placed second and first in the league match allows teams another chance of qualifying for the finals despite losing one match during the playoffs.
The system was introduced in 2011 and is still being used in the IPL.
