Jaguars Seek to Leverage Underdog Status for Continued Success in 2026

Despite a remarkable 13-4 record last season, the Jacksonville Jaguars often remained overlooked on the national stage. Head coach Liam Coen utilized this lack of recognition to inspire his players, creating a narrative of motivation as they approached each game. A notable instance was prior to their clash with the Denver Broncos, when Broncos head coach Sean Payton labeled the Jaguars a "small market" team. Coen ensured that his squad was aware of this remark, using it to fuel their determination.

On a recent episode of 'In Good Company with Mitch Morse,' Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence reflected on the team's perception across the league and the potential benefits it might bring moving into the 2026 season. “I think there’s always going to be that little brother feeling of our team in Jacksonville, which is a good thing, because I think our city has such a chip on its shoulder," Lawrence stated, as reported by Big Cat Country. He acknowledged that while the team feels somewhat disrespected, it also provides them with a unique motivation. "You look at it, there’s not a lot of people that really want the Jaguars to be good," he added.

Lawrence emphasized that while the Jaguars can draw inspiration from the perception of being underdogs, it cannot be their sole source of motivation. Aiming for consistency and striving to be competitive every year is crucial for the team's identity. “It doesn’t matter what people think. This is how we go about our business,” he asserted.

Resilience emerged as a defining trait for the Jaguars during the 2025 season. After suffering a significant setback by relinquishing a 19-point lead against the Houston Texans, the team faced a pivotal moment at 5-4. However, they responded impressively by winning eight consecutive games, clinching the division title, and securing a playoff spot, showcasing the strong character instilled by Coach Coen.
