Jalen Brunson's Camp Dismissed Mavericks' Extension Proposal as Insufficient

According to recent reports, the camp representing Jalen Brunson reacted with disbelief upon receiving a contract extension proposal from the Dallas Mavericks during the 2022 trade deadline. The Mavericks had offered a four-year deal worth $55 million, which was met with laughter from Brunson's camp, as detailed by NBA insider Marc Stein.

Stein noted, "The Brunson camp basically laughed at them and said, 'Uh, we'll take our chances in free agency now, you guys had your chance.'" This response highlights the confidence Brunson and his representatives had in his market value, considering the potential for a more lucrative deal elsewhere.

At that juncture, the Mavericks still had the opportunity to secure Brunson's services with a more appealing offer. Stein pointed out that they could have reached out to Brunson with a heartfelt apology and a significantly better proposal, stating, "They could have gone to 175 over five... They had the wherewithal to give Jalen Brunson a blow-away offer and they didn't do it."

Retaining Brunson could have provided the Mavericks with a powerful duo alongside Luka Dončić or opened the door to several trade possibilities. The failure to keep Brunson, particularly in light of how the Luka trade unfolded, has left a bitter taste among Mavericks fans, as Stein remarked, "like I said, where I live there is a lot of pain when the Knicks are on television."
